On May 22, 2009, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius swore in Dr. Margaret Hamburg as the Commissioner of Food and Drugs Administration. As Americans are increasingly demanding and expecting healthcare reforms, we are very proud to see two extremely talented women appointed to these two top jobs. The current healthcare system does put women into disadvantage and hence comprehensive healthcare is much needed for equal and fair access to all citizens.

In the case of women, higher cost of healthcare puts them at a disadvantage compared to men. Women who are partially employed, who are married and other such issues also leave them dependent to a costly insurance system when they are on their own.

Individual insurance market becomes inaccessible to majority of women who lose their  jobs because of the much higher costs and policies like preexisting conditions. The price of access to health insurance is currently unaffordable for most women and urgent steps need to be taken to rectify this and ensure that they can sustain as active members of the society.
